This started as photograph taken on the waterfront in Alameda, CA. Tracing paper was laid over a printout of the photo, and the silhouette was filled with line drawings, which were then scanned and colored in Photoshop.

GRUNGETRAP - the new album from Brooklyn, New York’s joshua G - is a sharp and succinct album of undeniable bangers. The sound, as promised, alchemizes grunge’s distorted guitars and dark melodies with trap influenced, heavy-on-the-808 beats. Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” and Stone Temple Pilots’ “Creep” get a 2026 infused makeover, careening between head nodding, acoustic guitar laden-grooves and floor shaking mayhem. Original song “Doomscroller” sounds like a nineties indie chart topper, while lyrically serving up an anthem of social commentary on our phone obsessed culture.

While not the first beat-making producer, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist of our tech-assisted age, it’s joshua G’s aesthetic that is so different - layering past and current genres with a sound that is both retro and futuristic. Materializing from this Pro Tools opus, G emotively sings, wails, and spits his signature vocals right in the pocket, with a raw, unvarnished finish influenced by heroes like Iggy, PJ Harvey, Wu-Tang, Bauhaus, Patti Smith, Mobb Deep, Gil-Scott Heron, Bowie and more. “Guilty,” the only strictly acoustic offering on the album, is a live take recorded straight into the Voice Memo app; with G expressing the guilt he feels as bombs rain down on innocent civilians across the globe.
